"Coach, may height requirement ba ang volleyball?"
Earlier today, I got the chance to take part in YSA's advocacy to teach kids volleyball, and a kid asked me what my height was which I answered (the kid thinking as if I was the tallest man on earth).
She followed up with one more question, she asked,
"Coach may height requirement ba ang volleyball?"
Without giving any thought, I answered, "Wala naman, pero dapat matangkad ka."
Looking back, I wish I answered the question differently. I know that height is an advantage in playing volleyball and it's something no one can teach and a matter of unttrainable science, but to that little girl, I say this to you:
A MATCH IS WON NOT BY THE MEASURE OF HOW HIGH ONE STANDS, BUT HOW BIG ONE'S HEART IS.
Thank you YSA for this humbling opportunity.
As one tvc coined, "Great things start from small beginnings." Yes, I too, was once like these kids, an aspiring volleyball player. I may not have reached the pinnacle of the sport but my aspiration has brought me where I am right now. My experience as a Youth Sport Advocate has been, by far, the most rewarding, volleyball-istically speaking. I hope more volunteers and more athletes do the same and help aspiring kids reach their potential."
